Compound semiconductor materials, which are made up of elements from groups III and V of the periodic table, make up LEDs (these are known as III-V materials). Gallium arsenide (GaAs) and gallium phosphide are two typical III-V compounds used to create LEDs (GaP). A fluorescent lamp tube is filled with mercury vapor and a mixture of argon, xenon, neon, or krypton. Inside the lamp, the pressure is around 0.3 percent of atmospheric pressure. Each tube has three rows of LEDs, each with 96 LEDs, for a total of 288 LEDs per tube. With the light switched on, you can see that the center row of LEDs is a warmer, yellowish-white in this photo (below).
