This alloy is used as a source of silicon to deoxidize steel and other ferrous alloys. Ferro silicon is can be used to make other ferro alloys, as well as in the manufacture of silicon. Further, this additive is used for manufacturing corrosion-resistant and high-temperature resistant ferrous silicon alloys, and silicon steel for electro motors and transformer cores. Being a universal "heat-blocker", Ferro Silicon is used in the production of carbon and stainless steels. In the manufacture of cast iron, it is used for accelerating graphitization. It can also be found in some electrode coatings in the process of arc welding.
