The most common thermoplastic material delivery form used by raw plastic material manufacturers for the plastics processing sector is plastic granules. Because of their pourability, plastic granules are a bulk material similar to sand, making granule shipment easy. After a chemical reaction to dissolve the many molecules (polymerization) and, if necessary, plastic processing (compounding), the plastic is first present in a conveying machine (extruder) as a liquid substance (melt). After that, the substance is extruded into strands and cooled with either air or water. The strands are then chopped into plastic granules that are only a few millimetres long using a rotating cutter. This may now be easily packaged and transported.
