Product Overview
Rangamaatia s Shantineketan Batik printed Lungies are very special, traditionally handloom woven from organic cotton by village cooperatives at the epicentre of Lungi production in South India. Colours and patterns we chose lend a contemporary feel to a traditional style. Non-toxic, colourfast dyes complete the circle of quality, ethical trading and organic cotton. The Batik Cotton lungi is unique in the range for its use of the Ikat dying technique. Ikat, is a style of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye on either the warp or weft before the threads are woven to create a design. All our lungis are sourced from a long established Tamil Nadu cooperative. Handloom weavers benefit from centrally purchased raw materials, better market pricing, health and disability insurance, a pension scheme and loans. Encouragement, funding and resources from central and local government is aimed at providing a sustainable living in the villages, and an alternative to migration to the cities.
