A brake shoe is a aluminum plate with a series of teeth that are positioned in front of the brake drum. When the brake pedal is depressed, the shoe is forced against the drum, which causes friction and, in turn, slows the car. Brake shoes are not an expensive component of a brake system, but they do wear out over time. The most common symptom of a worn brake shoe is a squeaking noise when the brakes are applied. Brake shoes are thin metal or synthetic material pieces that are installed on the inside of the brake drum to press against the brake lining and slow the rotation of the drum. Brake shoes are mounted on a hub, which can be adjusted by an arm that moves up and down on a threaded rod.
