In most of india, married women apply red kumkum to the parting of their hair above their forehead every day as a symbol. This is called vermilion, or in hindi, sindoor. In southern india, many unmarried girls wear a bindi every day, unlike in northern india where it is only worn as a symbol. Red kumkum is a traditionally hindu symbol of auspiciousness and love. This small, round piece of red sandalwood is the symbol of goddess lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Red kumkum is used as a decorative and auspicious mark on the forehead, or on the lips and cheeks. It is also used as a powder for blessing and as a tilak.
