A string bag, net bag, or mesh bag is an open netted bag. Mesh bags are made of strands, yarns, or non-woven synthetic material and have a net-like structure. Both reusable shopping bags and produce packaging are made with string bags. Several societies have used net-like material bags throughout history. Japanese divers have utilised string bags to collect artefacts to bring to the surface. Recycling and reuse were the norm in the GDR due to a lack of many types of raw materials; single-use plastic shopping bags were unusual.
