Wheat plants have long, slender leaves and hollow stems in most varieties. The inflorescences are made up of a variety of small flowers, ranging in number from 20 to 100. The flowers are borne in spikelets in groups of two to six, which later serve to house the flowers' subsequent two or three grains. Wheat is best adapted to temperate regions with rainfall between 30 and 90 cm, though it can be grown in a wide range of climates and soils (12 and 36 inches). The two main types of wheat are winter and spring wheat, with the severity of the winter determining whether a winter or spring type is grown. Winter wheat is always sown in the fall; spring wheat is always sown in the spring.
