Poppies have lobbed or divided leaves, and their sap is milky. The stalks on which the buds are growing are alone and regularly nod. The blooms contain four to six petals, and the ovary is surrounded by a ring of stamens. The two sepals often come off as the petals open up. The flavour of poppy seeds is somewhat woody and nutty. Poppy seeds have a very delicate flavour, which is why they are frequently used as a flexible topping because of their appealing texture. Poppy seeds are kidney-shaped and a millimetre or less in length. The kidney-shaped, light to dark blue, tiny seeds have a length of 1 mm (0.04 inch). They smell faintly like nuts and have a subtle nutty taste. They are particularly well-liked in baked items like bread. A pound of poppy seeds has between 1 and 2 million seeds or around 3,300 seeds per gramme.
