Bearing the scientific name Brassica juncea, mustard seeds have been known since times immemorial as oil seeds. The seeds are actually fruit pods of the mustard plant. Some other plants in the mustard family are cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, etc. basically mustards are native to Asia Minor. Mustard seeds occur in three colours, white, black and brown. It is grown during the winters. Whole mustard seeds are devoid of any flavour or smell. The pungent taste occurs only when the seeds are crushed and mixed with water. The white seeds are less pungent than the other two.
