Mung beans are known in India as moong dal. Mung beans are sometimes known as green gramme or moong. In Indian cookery, both whole and split lentils are used. When the husks are removed, the green colour of the mung beans is visible, as well as the yellow hue. A entire mung bean is split to make moong dal (the green lentil in the illustration above). This tiny yellow lentil can be found in whole moong (green lentil). Moong dal, also known as green grame, is a split version of whole mung beans that can be consumed with or without the skin. The skinned variations are yellow moong dal, yellow dal, or yellow small lentils. Skin split is a well-known variety.
