Plants can absorb silicon only in the form of Orthosilicic acid (OSA). OSA is water soluble and is the only biologically active form of silica. OSA is taken up by the plants in very low concentrations but that concentrations have very important effect on plant growth. Functions of OSA: - One of the main functions of OSA is improving the plants growth and yield, especially in stress conditions. To achieve plant tolerance in stress conditions, Silicon promotes photosynthesis by favourably exposing the leaves to light without dehydration. - OSA regulates the uptake of other minerals in plants. - OSA increases resistance to salinity and metal toxicity. - OSA enhances K/Na ratio and will reinforce the plant tissues.
