Kadaknath is an Indian breed of chicken local to Jhabua and Dhar districts of western Madhya Pradesh, where it is known as "Kali Masi", (fowl/chicken having black flesh). It is also known to some tribes in the neighboring districts of Barwani and Dewas. The meat of Kadaknath chicken is liquid-black with a unique flavor. The Kadaknath Black Chickens are noted for their jet-black plumage and meat on maturity. The hen weighs about 1.2 kg and the roosters weigh about 1.8 kg. The roosters mature sooner than the hens so that only the roosters are generally slaughtered for food. The reasons for blacked colored skin is still not know scientifically. It's believed in some communities that this black colored bird has medicinal values and it cures asthma, jaundice and kidney related diseases.
