The synthesis of nitrate, a major component of fertilizers, requires nitric acid. It's also used to make like and trinitrotoluene (TNT), as well as to oxidize metals. Nitric acid is used to make potassium nitrate, as well as an additive and coloring agent for salted meat during the preservation process. At concentrations of 20 wt percent and temperatures below 100 A C, nitric acid is a passivation acid for typical austenitic and duplex stainless steels having 18 wt percent chromium. It's used to clean and passivate stainless steel surfaces after they've been altered in various applications. Nitric acid is corrosive to the skin, causing severe burns, ulcers, scarring, dermatitis, and skin discoloration. Metric acid is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of (NH4NO3), which is primarily used in manufacturing fertilizers. Another use for nitric acid is in the oxidation process for the manufacture of adipic acid (HO2CCH2CH2CH2CH2CO2H) that is a dicarboxylic acid used in the production of nylon.
